Patrol emblems were authorized in 1921 to replace Patrol ribbons, but we're not officially produced until 1926. For this reason many Scouts made their own during these year's.
The round red felt patch with black embroidered design was produced between 1927 and 1933 and also had no BSA on the patch.
Starting in 1933, Patrol medallions continue to be made of red felt, but the letters BSA were added to the bottom and many of the designs were modified. They continued with a similar design for over 20 years, when the red felt background was replaced with red twill.
The round red felt patch with black embroidered design and BSA on the patch and the backside of the Ring was solid black threads was produced between 1933 and the late 1930s.
The round red felt patch with black embroidered design with BSA on the patch the and the backside of the Ring has black and white threads was produced from the 1940s mid-to-late 1950s.
The round red twill patch with black and border design and BSA on the patch was produced mid to late 1950s to 1971. The red twill Patrol patches came in three different backings. The earliest ones have a very thin Red Rubber back. It is believed these were only used for a couple of years. The backings were then changed to a pink or white gum back. These were used for many years until finally being changed to a clear plastic back.
As part of the redesigned Insignia changes in 1972, the red and black twill Patrol medallions were replaced with bright multi-colored Badges and the letters BSA were removed from the badges. Many color shades exist in both the background and embroidery. In 1989, they went through yet another change and the backgrounds and borders were all changed to a standard tan color.
